What is triple extraction?

Triple extraction is a process used to draw out different types of naturally occurring compounds from mushrooms using water and alcohol.

Water extraction helps release compounds such as beta-glucans, while alcohol extraction targets compounds that are not water-soluble.

Some extraction methods use multiple water stages, but this does not always mean a broader range of compounds has been accessed.

Medshrum combines water and alcohol extraction with ultrasonic-assisted technology to help break down mushroom cell walls more effectively. This approach supports access to a wider range of compounds and creates extracts that are more consistent, concentrated and readily absorbed.

Why are water and alcohol both used in extraction?

Different mushroom compounds are soluble in different mediums, so combining water and alcohol extraction may help create broader-spectrum mushroom extracts.

Water extraction is commonly associated with compounds such as beta-glucans, while alcohol extraction helps access compounds that are not water-soluble.

Medshrum combines water and alcohol extraction with ultrasonic-assisted technology as part of its triple extraction approach.

What does bioavailability mean?

Bioavailability refers to how efficiently compounds may be absorbed and utilised within the body after consumption. Extraction methods, mushroom species and formulation approaches can all influence bioavailability.

Medshrum uses ultrasonic-assisted triple extraction as part of its approach to creating highly concentrated, readily accessible mushroom extracts.

Why is chitin discussed with mushrooms?

Chitin is a natural structural fibre found in mushroom cell walls. Because chitin can make certain compounds more difficult to access, extraction methods are commonly used to help release and concentrate mushroom compounds more effectively.

Does extraction change the mushroom?

Extraction helps concentrate and access naturally occurring mushroom compounds from mushroom material.

Different extraction methods may influence the range and accessibility of compounds within the final extract.

Medshrum uses ultrasonic-assisted triple extraction as part of its approach.

What are broad-spectrum mushroom extracts?

Broad-spectrum mushroom extracts aim to retain a wider range of naturally occurring mushroom compounds.

Different extraction methods may influence the final compound profile and accessibility of the extract.

Medshrum uses ultrasonic-assisted triple extraction as part of this process.

Why do people choose liquid extracts?

Liquid extracts are often chosen for their concentrated format and ease of incorporation into daily routines.

Medshrum’s ultrasonic-assisted triple extraction is designed to support efficient access to naturally occurring mushroom compounds.

Why do people care about extraction ratios?

Extraction ratios may help provide context around concentration and processing methods, though they are only one part of overall extract quality.

Extraction technique, mushroom species, sourcing and testing standards may also influence the final extract.

What extraction methods do you use?

Medshrum uses a combination of water and alcohol extraction to draw out a broad range of naturally occurring compounds from mushrooms.

This is supported by ultrasonic-assisted technology, which helps break down the mushroom cell walls and improve the release of these compounds.

Together, this approach allows for more complete extraction and helps create tinctures that are consistent, concentrated and readily absorbed.

What makes Medshrum different from other mushroom brands?

Medshrum focuses on how the extract is made, not just the ingredient itself.

Each tincture is produced using fruiting body only, grown in controlled Nordic environments, and extracted using water, alcohol and ultrasonic-assisted extraction. This approach helps access a broader range of compounds in a consistent way.

All products are Soil Association certified organic and third-party tested for quality and purity.

Rather than offering multiple formats, we focus on a small number of refined extracts designed to fit into a simple daily rhythm.

You can explore this approach most clearly through our Lion’s mane tincture.

What is the difference between fruiting body and mycelium?

Fruiting body refers to the visible part of the mushroom, while mycelium is the root-like structure.

Different products use different parts depending on their approach.

Mushroom Definitions

What are beta glucans?

Beta glucans are a specific type of naturally occurring polysaccharide found in mushrooms, oats and yeast. In functional mushrooms, they are commonly associated with the mushroom fruiting body and are frequently discussed when comparing mushroom extracts, sourcing standards and extraction methods.

The structure and concentration of beta glucans can vary depending on the mushroom species, cultivation conditions and extraction process used. Within the modern functional mushroom category, beta glucans are often referenced in discussions around extract composition and ingredient transparency.

What are triterpenes?

Triterpenes are naturally occurring compounds found in certain mushrooms, plants and herbs. In functional mushrooms, they are most commonly associated with Reishi and are often linked to the mushroom’s naturally bitter profile.

Different mushroom species contain different triterpene profiles, and extraction methods can influence which naturally occurring compounds are present within a final mushroom extract. In recent years, triterpenes have become increasingly discussed within conversations around mushroom extraction methods and ingredient composition.

Medshrum uses hot water, alcohol and  ultrasonic-assisted extraction across its 100% fruiting body extracts, including our  Reishi tincture.

What are polysaccharides?

Polysaccharides are naturally occurring complex carbohydrates found within mushrooms, where they form part of the mushroom’s cellular structure. Different mushroom species contain different polysaccharide profiles, which can vary depending on cultivation methods, growing conditions and extraction techniques.

When people discuss mushroom extracts, polysaccharides are often referenced in relation to extraction quality, ingredient transparency and mushroom composition. Beta glucans are one type of mushroom polysaccharide commonly associated with Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Chaga and Turkey Tail extracts.

What is mycelium?

Mycelium refers to the underground root-like network of a fungus, made up of fine thread-like structures called hyphae. In nature, mycelium plays an important role in breaking down organic matter and supporting nutrient cycling within forest ecosystems.

Within the mushroom industry, mycelium may refer either to the living fungal network itself or to mycelium grown on substrates such as grain and used in some mushroom supplements. This differs from the mushroom fruiting body — the visible part of the mushroom traditionally associated with culinary and functional mushroom use.

At Medshrum, our tinctures and powders use 100% fruiting body extracts rather than mycelium grown on grain.

We also use mycelium in our biodegradable packaging, where it is grown around agricultural waste to create a natural alternative to protective packaging materials.

What does traceability mean?

Traceability refers to the ability to track where a product and its ingredients come from throughout the supply chain. In functional mushrooms, this can include details such as mushroom species, cultivation methods, extraction processes, testing standards and manufacturing practices.

Strong traceability helps improve transparency around sourcing, consistency and product quality. It also allows batches to be monitored more accurately from cultivation through to final production, which has become increasingly important within the modern mushroom supplement category.

At Medshrum, we prioritise traceability through certified organic sourcing, third-party testing and carefully selected Nordic cultivation partners. Our extracts are produced using 100% fruiting bodies alongside  ultrasonic-assisted extraction and other established extraction methods.
