Chaga is the wild heart of the Medshrum world: dark birch, cold air, slow growth and the patience of northern forests. It does not look polished or delicate. It looks ancient.
Chaga tincture: the short answer
Chaga is a birch-grown functional mushroom, Inonotus obliquus, traditionally valued in northern forest cultures. A good Chaga tincture should show clear species identity, responsible sourcing, organic certification, extraction method and testing.
For Medshrum, Chaga is a story of ingredient provenance as much as extraction: selectively harvested in the Nordic region, certified organic and made into a liquid extract with water, organic alcohol and ultrasonic-assisted extraction.
Best for: earthy winter rituals, coffee or cacao routines, forest-rooted antioxidant tradition and people who want their mushroom supplement to feel dark, grounding and traceable.
What Chaga is and what it is not
Chaga is often called a mushroom, but its familiar charcoal-black form is technically a sclerotium: a compact fungal mass that develops on birch. The rough, cracked exterior can look like burnt wood; inside, the material is warm rust-brown.
It is shaped by a long relationship with its host tree and environment. Chaga contains naturally occurring compounds including polysaccharides, beta-glucans, polyphenols and melanin. That composition is part of why it has attracted scientific interest, but it is not a reason to turn a forest ingredient into a medical promise. The stronger route is clarity: what it is, where it comes from, how it is sourced and how it is made.
Nordic origins: why place matters
Chaga grows across cold birch forests in northern Europe and beyond. Medshrum sources its Chaga through trusted Nordic supply partners, with traceability back to the forest region and a focus on organic standards.
Nordic origin is not a shortcut to a health claim. It is material provenance. Climate, tree species, seasons and harvesting decisions all form part of the story of a wild ingredient. The northern forest gives Chaga its particular character: slow, dark, woody and deeply tied to birch.
Sápmi, Sámi harvesters and cultural respect
Sápmi is the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sámi people. It extends across northern Norway, Sweden and Finland, and Russia's Kola Peninsula. The Sámi are an Indigenous people with distinct languages, cultures and livelihoods; their relationship with land cannot be reduced to a mood board for a wellness product.
Medshrum's wild Chaga is gathered in the Nordic region by Sámi harvesters using low-impact, selective methods. That knowledge is practical: it means knowing what to take, what to leave and how seasonal conditions affect the forest. We refer to this relationship with care. It is an ongoing sourcing relationship grounded in respect for harvesting knowledge and the forest, not a claim of ownership over Sámi culture.

Selective harvesting: leaving the forest with something still intact
Wild ingredients require restraint. Our sourcing standard is selective, seasonal harvesting with attention to the host tree and the wider woodland. Chaga is not treated as an unlimited raw material: harvest decisions should leave sufficient material and avoid unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding ecosystem.
Traceability and organic certification help put meaningful checks around a romantic-sounding word such as wild. They cannot replace care in the forest, but they do make it easier to ask better questions of the supply chain: where did it come from, how was it gathered, how was it handled, and who is accountable for the answer?
Clean air is provenance, not a miracle claim
Cold Nordic forests are part of the Chaga story. So is the need to protect them. Forests in the Nordic and Baltic region face the growing pressures of warming temperatures, drought, pests, storms and biodiversity loss. That is why a responsible sourcing conversation cannot stop at a picturesque photograph of birch bark.
For us, clean-air provenance means choosing a supply chain rooted in a forest environment, then pairing that with documented organic standards, testing and a clear account of sourcing and standards. It does not mean that Nordic turns a supplement into a cure.
Extraction: making a liquid ritual from a dense forest ingredient
Chaga's dense structure is one reason we make an extract rather than simply grinding it and calling it a day. Our process combines:
- Water extraction,
- Organic alcohol extraction, and
- Ultrasonic-assisted extraction, which uses sound waves during processing.
Water and alcohol draw out different naturally occurring constituents. Ultrasonic assistance supports efficient processing of the ingredient's structure. The finished tincture is independently tested and made using Soil Association-certified organic Chaga. You can read more about how liquid extracts compare with powders in our Mushroom Tincture vs Powder guide.
A dark, grounding daily ritual
Chaga tastes earthy, woody and lightly bitter. It works especially well in coffee, cacao, tea or warm water. In the Medshrum rhythm, it is the kettle mushroom: one for unhurried mornings, darker months and the small pause before the day gets loud.
Shake the bottle and take the suggested serving shown on the label. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, have a medical condition or are unsure whether a supplement is right for you, speak to a qualified healthcare professional first.
Sustainability and the future of Nordic forestry
Sustainability is not secured by a single material, certification or word on a label. It asks more of us: lower-impact harvesting, traceable processing, care for biodiversity and a willingness to improve as the evidence and systems change.
Across the Nordic region, forestry has to hold more than one purpose at once: livelihoods, climate resilience, biodiversity and cultural rights. Indigenous knowledge and place-based ecological knowledge are increasingly recognised as part of serious conservation and restoration conversations. For Medshrum, the lesson is simple: ingredients should create an incentive to protect the ecosystems they come from, not simply extract value from them.
Medshrum's part is practical: we choose organic, traceable Nordic Chaga; we ask questions of our supply chain; we use low-waste mycelium packaging made from agricultural waste; and we continue to improve where our impact is not yet good enough.

Frequently asked questions
What is Chaga tincture?
Chaga tincture is a liquid extract made from Chaga, Inonotus obliquus, a birch-grown functional mushroom traditionally valued in northern forest cultures. A good tincture should show species identity, responsible sourcing, organic certification, extraction method and testing.
Is Chaga tincture better than powder?
It depends on the ritual you will actually keep. A tincture is quick to use directly or in drinks, while powder can suit coffee, cacao or recipes. With either format, look for clear extraction information, organic certification and testing.
How do you choose Chaga in the UK?
Choose Chaga by proof: the Latin name Inonotus obliquus, responsible sourcing, organic certification, extraction method, transparent UK product information and independent testing. The label should make the quality easy to see.
Why does Chaga grow on birch trees?
Chaga commonly develops on birch trees in cold northern forests, forming the dark, dense growth known as a sclerotium. That relationship with birch is part of Chaga's ecology and one reason provenance and harvesting standards matter.
What makes Nordic Chaga different?
Nordic Chaga is valued for its cold-forest provenance, birch habitat and harvesting culture. For Medshrum, the difference is not just place; it is traceability, selective gathering, organic standards and careful extraction.
